A Steinway Artist, Dr. Nicolas Costantinou is renowned for impressing audiences with his daring selection of repertoire, both old and new, and for his ability to collaborate with exceptional instrumental ensembles. Critics have hailed him as “…an artist of deep emotions, capable of performing music with his whole being and soul…” (Kaleva), while his interpretations have been described as “colossal” and “dramatic” (D. Nicolau).
Dr. Costantinou has given numerous concerts throughout Europe and the United States and has appeared in prestigious halls such as Wigmore Hall in London, the Brahms-Saal of the Musikverein in Vienna, the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, and the Grand Hall of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He has been invited to perform at international festivals across Europe, including the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival, the Oulunsalo Soi Music Festival (Finland), the Gödöllő Chamber Music Festival (Hungary), the Ledra Music Soloists International Chamber Music Festival, and the Kypria Festival (Cyprus). He has performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Russian Chamber Philharmonic St. Petersburg, the Budapest Concert Orchestra, the Failoni Chamber Orchestra, and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra under the direction of conductors such as Konrad von Abel, Juri Gilbo, and Esa Heikkilä.
Dr. Costantinou has recorded five diverse albums for the Odradek label, featuring music from the Classical period to the twenty-first century and ranging from solo repertoire to chamber music collaborations with distinguished instrumentalists.
In addition to his solo appearances, Dr. Costantinou enjoys collaborating with a wide range of musicians. His chamber music partners frequently include internationally acclaimed artists such as Vilmos Szabadi, Chloë Hanslip, Simos Papanas, Kazuhiro Tagaki, Máté Szűcs, Gustav Rivinius, Erkki Rautio, David Cohen, Péter Somodari, Tytus Miecznikowski, János Bálint, Gábor Varga, and the Meta4 and Akadémia String Quartets. He also has a strong interest in the art song repertoire.
Dr. Costantinou was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the Royal College of Music in London. He also holds a Master of Music in Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music and graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest and the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Szeged. Among others, he studied with Edna Golandsky, Márta Gulyás, Daniel Shapiro, Sándor Falvai, and Ferenc Kerek, and participated in masterclasses with distinguished pianists such as Dmitri Bashkirov, Nicolas Economou, Vadim Suchanov, and Ferenc Rádos.
A certified instructor of the Taubman Approach to Piano Playing, Dr. Costantinou is deeply committed to healthy and efficient piano technique. Many of his students have won prizes at international piano competitions and have been admitted to prestigious conservatories and universities.
