Grouping on More Than One Level

Grouping helps us understand and internalize patterns. Playing is easier, learning is quicker and memorization more reliable using this tool. Some passages, in addition, profit from organizing groups of notes in more than one way to reveal the full scope of what is happening in the music.

Two pianists will perform for faculty members Marc Steiner and Elizabeth Swarthout.

Mary Moran

11:30-12:30 PM

Fundamentals for Learning a Jazz Standard

The tune “Body and Soul” is a classic 32-bar jazz standard played and recorded countless times.  Debbie will show some basic ways to learn the tune, give a harmonic and melodic analysis, and suggest some strategies for improvising.
