IN
SEARCH OF THE LYRIC VOICE:
Twentieth Century Music and Poetry
The “lyric
voice” in 20th century poetry and music
had rather a hard life. The apparent exhaustion
of Romanticism in the face of modernity relegated
the lyric—the _expression of intense individual
feeling—to something that was inauthentic,
trivial, and nostalgic. By looking at the music
of Stravinsky and Shostakovich
and the poetry of Wallace Stevens, William
Carlos Williams, Elizabeth Bishop,
and William Butler Yeats, we can see
how these artists transformed the lyric to an
apparently impersonal yet still highly charged
_expression of feeling.
