IN SEARCH OF THE LYRIC VOICE: Twentieth Century Music and Poetry
The “lyric voice” in 20th century poetry and music had rather a hard life. The apparent exhaustion of Romanticism in the face of modernity relegated the lyric—the expression of intense individual feeling—to something that was inauthentic, trivial, and nostalgic. By looking at the music of Stravinsky and Shostakovich and the poetry of Wallace Stevens, William Carlos Williams, Elizabeth Bishop, and William Butler Yeats, we can see how these artists transformed the lyric to an apparently impersonal yet still highly charged expression of feeling.
presented by Kendall Feeney and Anthony Flinn
Ms. Feeney is a Golandsky Institute Faculty member based in Spokane, WA
Anthony Flinn, Professor of English at Eastern Washington University, is a specialist in the British and American poetry of Modernism. He is the author of the book, Approaching Authority: Transpersonal Growth in the Poetry of Yeats, Eliot, and Williams, as well as works on the feminism of William Carlos Williams and the semiotics of film and the graphic arts. |

An Exhibit of Art Work by Tony Cimino
Flutist, Pianist, Fine Artist, Poet-- Dr. Tony Leonardo Cimino has been a creative artist all his life. Throughout this week's Golandsky International Piano Festival, we are delighted that he has offered to display his artwork. Before and after each performance, and, of course, during intermissions, you have the opportunity to view his art exhibit and to speak with him about his artwork.
In the past 4 years Tony Cimino has given one-man art shows at a small gallery in Brooklyn, Artscetra. Each show had a theme and featured a new self-portrait. To date, Tony Cimino has more than seventy self-portraits, and more than sixty linoleum/woodcuts, collages, boxes, puzzles, 80 illustrations drawn on gum wrappers -- The Gumwrapper Series -- and several hundred illustrations in a variety of sizes, in color and black/white. He enjoys drawing on anything that will accept ink: paper bags, napkins, paper towels, sheet music, leaves, store receipts, wood, cardboard, cloth, newspaper, gum wrappers, etc. Dr. Cimino is also a published poet and working on his first book.
